9ct gold badger head pendant and chain with natural, dark blue sapphire eyes.
Found in its different guises across Europe, Asia and North America the badger is a much loved animal with strength and courage that are celebrated in countless folktales and children’s stories.
This piece depicts a European Badger (Meles meles), the nocturnal, burrowing creature featured in Kenneth Graham’s classic ‘The Wind in the Willows’, as Tommy Brock in Beatrix Potter’s children’s books and as the house symbol for Hufflepuff in the ‘Harry Potter’ series.
The European badger is a powerfully built black, white, and grey animal with a small head, a stocky body, little black eyes and short tail. The European badger is generally a social, peaceful animal, having been known to share its burrow with other species such as rabbits, red foxes and raccoon dogs.
The yellow gold badger measures a little under 2cm (which is around three quarters of an inch). Without its gold chain the pendant weighs 3.8g (5.8g with the chain). It has eyes made from cabochon cut, natural, dark blue sapphire eyes. The badger has been given a Hallmark from the Assay Office to prove that it is made of gold.
The gold badger has been hung from an elegant, 18 inch long solid gold chain. This pendant is supplied in its own gift box.
To create it I have utilized some of the most up-to-date technology alongside some of the oldest skills still used in jewellery and goldsmithing. The original was hand carved from wax before being digitally scanned and resized. It was cast in solid 9ct gold which was then reworked, for several hours, using traditional Goldsmiths’ tools, to produce a very fine detail.
To emphasize the details of the carving, the pendant was given a part polished and part satin finish. The badger’s black stripes were created with a baked-on ceramic patina.
I do my best to insure all the raw materials I use have been sourced responsibly and I always price my work honestly.
All my pieces are made in a small workshop in the English countryside.
